Professor Terry Nolan
He went to medical school at the University of Western Australia, where he obtained first class honours in a Bachelor of Medical Science degree undertaken in part at the University of Otago in New Zealand. He did his paediatric training at Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne and Montreal Children's Hospital, Canada, where he also studied for a PhD in epidemiology and biostatistics from McGill University. He was Professor of Paediatrics and Deputy Chair of the University of Melbourne Department of Paediatrics, based at the Royal Children's Hospital, prior to establishing the Melbourne School of Population Health in 2001.
Professor Nolan’s research includes clinical trials of new vaccines, and epidemiologic studies of respiratory viruses and other vaccine-preventable infections. His research program includes a research group that contributes to the NHMRC-funded national capacity building program in mathematical modelling of vaccine-preventable disease, focussing especially on pandemic influenza modelling.
He is Chair of ATAGI (Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation), the Australian Government peak advisory body on vaccines. He was a member of NHMRC’s Research Committee for a decade and was Deputy Chair in the last triennium, and has served on numerous NHMRC grant review and policy committees. He is Chair of the ARC’s Instrument Development Group for the Government’s new ERA program (Excellence for Research in Australia).
