Aims:

To determine the effects of cholesterol lowering with a combination of simvastatin and ezetimibe on the risk of major vascular complications in patients with chronic kidney diseases.

Methods:

SHARP is a randomised placebo-controlled trial among 9,000 individuals recruited from about 200 centres worldwide. The George Institute, in collaboration with the Australia and New Zealand Society of Nephrology, is coordinating and overseeing the recruitment and follow-up of about one-quarter of the study participants from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Thailand. Mean follow-up for participants will be four and a half years.

Status/Results:

Patient recruitment for SHARP commenced during 2003. The trial is currently enrolling patients from Australia, Austria, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Thailand, the UK and the USA. Recruitment will continue until the end of 2005.

Recruitment has commenced and the study is well underway in 64 centres in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia and Thailand.

Globally, around 6,000 participants have been randomised to SHARP. Over 70% of the regional target has been reached from the Asia Pacific region. The follow-up of patients is scheduled to continue until 2007 and the results will be reported in 2008.
