Policy Pathways: a stakeholder analysis of the Australian road safety research-to-policy process

Aims

The transfer of young driver safety research into policy will be examined in this study

To examine the main factors facilitating and inhibiting the effective transfer of road safety research into policy within Australia.

Methods

This study is composed of a comparative stakeholder and media analysis focused on the introduction of passenger and/or nighttime restrictions for provisional drivers within NSW, VIC, QLD and WA.

Stakeholder analysis

A series of interviews with representatives from all key young driver road safety stakeholder groups has been conducted within each state. Analyses will uncover key differences in the perceptions of these representatives that may illuminate those factors most responsible for the introduction of the specific policies in question.

Media analysis

A detailed national media analysis has also been conducted to determine the dominant framing mechanisms used to structure public and political discussions of the road safety policies in question. This analyses will uncover some of the ways that the mass-media influences the introduction and policy outcomes of public health interventions.

Status/Results

The data collection phase of the stakeholder and media analyses are complete and analyses are currently in progress. Findings will be presented during the end of 2008 and early 2009.
