The Effectiveness of Financing and Aid Coordination in Responding to the HIV Epidemic in the Pacific Region
This project is being conducted for the UNAIDS Commission on AIDS in the Pacific and explores the financing for HIV in the Pacific and the effectiveness of regional coordination mechanisms in responding to the disease.
The George Institute is the lead author in a research collaboration with UNSW Global to assess the effectiveness of aid coordination and the sufficiency of financing for the HIV response in the Pacific. It forms part of a set of studies commissioned by the Commission on AIDS in the Pacific with a view to a major report in mid to late 2009. The study includes desk research, interviews with key stakeholders and a thorough analysis of past and future financing commitments by donors, governments and multilateral agencies. Despite small populations and low HIV prevalence, there are a number of major HIV donors and agencies working in the region - many through regional mechanisms covering a large number of the 22 Pacific Island countries and territories. The research attempted to decipher the various coordination and delivery mechanisms to extract what was working well and what were seen as inefficiencies.
