Critical Care & Trauma
Overview
Pre-hospital care is an important aspect of our research in critical care and trauma
Critical Care
Critical care research focuses on all aspects of the management of critically ill patients from the pre-hospital phase through hospital management, recovery, rehabilitation and long term health related functional recovery and quality of life.
Trauma Care
Trauma care research focuses more specifically on the impact of traumatic injury to the patient. The focus of trauma care research is currently in relation to trauma systems with a particular emphasis on the pre-hospital care area, ensuring that the right patient gets to the right hospital in the shortest amount of time to ensure the best outcomes. The focus on trauma management reflects the paucity of research in this area and the need to implement effective evidence-based trauma care.
New Initiatives
The China Trauma Collaboration
This multi-stage initiative is a collaboration involving a number of hospital emergency departments in China and The George Institute, China. A key objective is to develop an on-going registry based study that will serve as a platform for identifying and addressing future challenges in trauma care.
Ongoing Projects
- Managing Return-to-play Decisions Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury - mTBI
The study will estimate the incidence of mild traumatic brain injury in Rugby players, assess the risk and protective factors for injury and recovery and, will develop recommendations on return-to-play following mTBI. - Normoglycaemia in Intensive Care Evaluation and Survival Using Glucose Algorithm Regulation - NICE-SUGAR
A multi-centre, open label, randomised trial comparing the effects of two blood glucose targets on 90 day all cause mortality in ICU patients. - Retrospective Analysis of Trauma Transfers - RATTS study
Aims to identify rates of compliance to protocol 4 (the trauma by-pass protocol), estimate the time to definitive care in rural NSW and determine the impact of interventions implemented by the NSW Ambulance Service on adherence to protocol 4.
Recently Completed Projects
- Saline vs. Albumin Fluid Evaluation - SAFE
SAFE investigated the effects of fluid resuscitation with 4% human albumin solution or normal saline solution on all cause mortality of intensive care unit patients.
