Australian Ambassador Geoff Raby and Prof Han Qide help launch the Institute in China
The Institute, originally known as The Institute for International Health, began operating in 1999 with the support of the University of Sydney Faculty of Medicine.
In December 2000, the Institute moved from the Royal North Shore Hospital to the the University of Sydney campus in Newtown and established affiliations with Sydney South West Area Health Service and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.
The Institute was renamed The George Institute for International Health in early 2004 to coincide with its move to larger premises in the refurbished King George V building within the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital campus.
The Institute has since expanded into a second Sydney office, located in Kent St.
The George Institute has experienced substantial growth since 1999 and now employs over 250 staff.
In April 2004, the Institute opened an office in Beijing, China, which became a formal legal entity in 2006 and was officially launched in 2007. Another subsidiary in Hyderabad, India will be launched in 2007.
Since its establishment, The George Institute has launched research, policy development and training initiatives in over 40 countries, with the collaboration of more than 400 hospitals and universities worldwide.
